Dr Richard Gartrell is a general surgeon located in Melbourne. He is undertaking sub-specialist training in colorectal surgery, having completed a research fellowship at Western Health and the University of Melbourne. He is currently in his final year of colorectal clinical fellowship at Box Hill Hospital, after completing his first year at Royal Melbourne Hospital.
Dr Gartrell graduated from medicine in 2010 and began surgical training in far north Queensland. His surgical training involved many relocations throughout Queensland, but culminated in the completion of fellowship and being awarded fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2020.
Dr Gartrell is committed to ongoing research and supporting the academic careers of medical students. He is a founding member of “Quest”, Australia’s first trainee-led research collaborative, which provides the opportunity for students to be involved in published research projects.
Outside of his clinical commitments, Dr Gartrell is a lecturer and examiner with the University of Melbourne. He is responsible for delivering the surgical educational program and conducting clinical assessments.
