A/Prof Aaron Buckland is an Australian and internationally trained and recognised orthopaedic spinal surgeon. He recently returned to Australia after practising in New York City at NYU Langone Health in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. In addition to his full-time clinical appointments at NYU Langone Health and Bellevue Hospital, A/Prof Buckland was appointed to the academic position of Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, and has run a world-renowned clinical research program via his position as the Director of Spine Research at New York University.
A/Prof Buckland specialises in treatment of adult and paediatric spinal deformities, complex revision spinal surgery, and minimally invasive procedures including disc replacement.
A/Prof Buckland understands that innovations, techniques and technology are always evolving within the spinal surgery field and is at the forefront of education and training. A/Prof Buckland is a member of the Harms Study Group, the pinnacle international organisation of surgeons dedicated to paediatric spinal deformity research. In addition to his research in spinal deformity, A/Prof Buckland’s research on the effect of spinal disease and spinal surgery on the outcomes of total hip replacement in adults has resulted in changes in the way surgeons plan and execute surgeries in patients with hip and spine pathologies. A/Prof Buckland holds several positions on medical advisory boards and consultancy positions in the medical device sector and not-for-profit organisations.
A/Prof Buckland has an extensive list of more than 90 peer-reviewed publications in orthopaedic and spinal research, and has given more than 90 presentations at major international conferences. He continues to serve on multiple committees with international specialty societies, including Scoliosis Research Society, North American Spine Society, and was the Program Chair for the International Society for the Advancement of Spinal Surgery annual meeting. He is a reviewer for multiple international journals including Bone and Joint Journal, The Spine Journal, Global Spine Journal and ANZ Journal of Surgery.
In addition to A/Prof Buckland’s professional interests, he is an avid golfer, tennis player and guitarist.
