Prof Jai Raman is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at The Austin and St Vincent’s Hospitals, Melbourne. He has a particular interest in arterial grafts in coronary surgery, heart failure therapy, complex heart surgery and minimally invasive cardiac surgery. He additionally has significant experience in minimally invasive aortic and cardiac surgery, including heart failure surgery, heart transplantation and lung transplantation.
Prof Jai Raman is a pioneer within his field and was the first Cardiothoracic surgeon who successful performed certain procedures within Victoria, Australia and the world. He was the first to successfully perform a dynamic cardiomyoplasty in Victoria and the first to successfully perform a Ventricular Containment procedure and Basal Ventricular Stabilisation procedure in the world. Prof Raman has contributed significantly to other techniques and procedures to improve patient outcomes.
Prof Raman completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at St John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India in 1984, then a Master of Medicine at The University of Sydney in 1993. He subsequently undertook a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, Melbourne, in 1997. Prof Raman completed his PhD in Surgical Heart Failure Therapies at the University of Melbourne.
Prof Raman is currently a Research Professor at two leading US Universities, Oregon Health & Science University and the University of Illinois. He is also a Professor at the University of Melbourne, Deakin University, and Monash University in Victoria, and James Cook University in Queenlsand. Throughout his medical career, Prof Raman has held several academic roles within Australian and American universities. This has paved a solid foundation for his vast number of research papers (>250), patents for new devices (>30), books and book chapters. In addition to his clinical work and research, he has taken on teaching roles within the universities, training and supervising residents and fellows. He currently runs the Spectromix Lab and consortium looking at multi-modal spectroscopy in improved diagnostics. He has personal surgical experience of over 6400 major cardiac cases and 1000 major thoracic procedures.
Prof Raman is a member of several professional societies globally, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Heart Association, American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the ANZ Cardiothoracic Surgical Society.
Prof Raman is available for appointments in relation to independent medical examinations, workplace injuries, transport accidents, public liability matters, total permanent disability and medical negligence claims. He is also available for complex case discussion, file review and telemedicine assessments.
