Dr Zoe Gao is a comprehensive general ophthalmologist with subspecialty interests in cataract surgery, oculoplastics, and strabismus.
Dr Gao completed a Bachelor of Medical Science before undertaking a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Tasmania, graduating with First Class Honours. She completed a Master of Philosophy in Ophthalmology before commencing ophthalmology training at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. Dr Gao subsequently undertook six months of fellowship working for the Fred Hollows Foundation Australia in central Australia and the Pacific Eye Institute in Fiji. She then completed a further 12 months of fellowship in Oculoplastic surgery, Paediatric ophthalmology and Strabismus at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in the UK.
Dr Gao is currently appointed as an Ophthalmologist at the Royal Hobart Hospital and as an Honorary Consultant at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital Oculoplastics and Ocular Motility clinics, and she conducts a private Ophthalmology practice in Hobart, Tasmania.
Dr Gao was awarded the Kenneth G Howsam Medal for Excellence for the Advanced Clinical Examination, as the most outstanding candidate in the final exit examinations in Australia and New Zealand in 2014.
Dr Gao has published several book chapters and international journal articles, and she has presented at major conferences on matters related to ophthalmology, including amblyopia, refractive error, Horner’s syndrome and visual impairment in children in Sri Lanka. Dr Gao maintains current professional development certification and has been involved in teaching medical students, nurses and doctors.
Dr Gao is a member of the RANZCO Medicare Advisory Committee, RANZCO Women in Ophthalmology Advisory Boards and Workforce Committee, and the APAO Young Ophthalmologists Standing Committee.
She is an accomplished pianist and holds a Diploma of Associate in Music (AMus) in Piano.
Dr Gao is available for appointments in relation to independent medical examination, medical negligence matters, complex case discussion, file review and telemedicine assessments.
